How many developers do you know that could produce a cloud application (an application program that functions in the cloud) in less than a month? With knowledge of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) technology, more developers are increasing their ability to do just that by more easily overcoming challenges to app development.

Compared to the traditional method for app creation—which required building and maintaining a complex infrastructure to support app development—PaaS is specific to cloud app development, so growing in popularity with the rise of the cloud itself. In fact, nearly 59 percent of respondents to a Cloud Pulse survey said they use PaaS to develop and deploy cloud applications.

The use of PaaS by developers has greatly increased work capacity for a few reasons. Because the platform is cloud-based there is no need for an IT team to install the hardware, middleware, Web servers and other equipment that are normally associated with cloud app creation. By not relying on an operations team, productivity is streamlined.

IT staff can now focus their efforts on more mission-critical tasks. Moreover, the startup cost of a mobile app is greatly reduced since development can be achieved via the cloud. Now, developing apps is as simple as selecting the type of “environment” you’d like to work in from a coding perspective and getting started.

Using the cloud platform to develop apps gives those doing so the ability to better interact and collaborate with everyone involved: designers, architects and the developers.

As the PaaS market expands, more software developers will have an easier time developing and launching cloud apps. While some may not be completely on board with operating through a cloud system, the benefits are apparent and can significantly improve the productivity of your app development.
