Businesses are increasingly investing in mobile application development to transform workflows and processes. For instance, consider the following compelling numbers we recently blogged about, derived from a recent IDC survey:
- The majority of IT teams say they plan to allocate at least 25 percent of their software budgets toward mobile application development and management by 2017.
- Over 33 percent of large enterprises plan to deploy a mobile application this year; up to 40 percent of organizations plan to deploy more than fivemobile apps.
- 100 percent of line of business (LOB) applications in customer-facing roles and 75 percent of LOB apps in internally facing roles will be built for mobile-first consumption by 2017.
Even more, mobile application development was listed as one of the top five areas of IT spending for 2015 by executives recently polled by Computerworld. Almost 40 percent of respondents said they plan to spend more in this area.
By creating custom mobile applications, companies can extend market reach and competitiveness, in effect driving organizational growth and clearing a path for new areas of profitability. Custom mobile application development is set to play a defining role for organizational growth in 2015; however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that organizations will be able to successfully derive business value from their mobile app investments.
There are many factors that can prevent companies from realizing the full business value of mobile application creation. For instance, these companies may not have a clear understanding of the mobile market in the first place; they may need to learn how to define their core areas of value in order to better capitalize on them; or they may be unaware of the types of pitfalls that are common with mobile app creation.
